July 25, 2011- Vermont:The Inn at Sawmill Farm...

We go on several outings each year. As there are so many great places within driving distance of Boston we are spoiled for choice. The goals of the outings are: to get out of the office; try out some gear InTheWild; maybe make some new friends. We decided this year's Summer Outing would be to the Green Mountains of Vermont. Even we don't think about Vermont in the Summer ("Wait, don't you need snow to go to Vermont?") so we thought it would be good to see it in the "off" season.

After a bit of research, the interns found a great little inn called The Inn at Sawmill Farm at the edge of the Green Mountains and it turned out to be the perfect base camp for our lower Vermont excursion. It took us a little over three hours to get there (including a stop for an awesome lunch) from Boston. The Inn at Sawmill Farm is a beautiful country inn that is just a few miles from Mount Snow. There are 21 uniquely decorated rooms (12 in the farm house, remainders in the various cottages) on the property. A few of the room and all of the cottages have fireplaces. All have private baths and some with jaccuzi tubs.

In the construction of the Inn, the existing hand-hewn posts and beams, original barn boards, old bricks and field stones were all incorporated into the layout. This enabled the flavor of the buildings to be retained. The barn's red & white exterior walls became part of an interior hallway and the hayloft was transformed into a library and game room.

Whether you want to meet up with friends for a drink, find a quiet place to sit and read, or just to hang out and relax after a day's outing, there is a perfect room in the main house for it. The popular times for the inn are the holidays, during the Fall foliage, and the Winter skiing season. However, if you want some peace and quiet, the Inn at Sawmill Farm is the perfect Summer secret hiding place!

Beginning in July, the Inn at Sawmill Farm hosts a Wednesday Wine Dinner every week starting at 7PM. The dinners have four to five courses, with each course carefully paired with selected wines. If the weather is agreeable, the dinners are be served open-air, pool-side, with heaters, floating candles, and a fire pit for toasting s'mores. We attended one when we were there. While the weather did not cooperate, the food was AMAZING and the company fantastic! Just be aware that seating is limited to twenty four, so reserve early!

We could have easily spent our entire visit without leaving the Inn. On the property, there is an outdoor pool, a tennis court, two ponds for trout fishing, and a couple of gazebos. The Inn is just down the road from two 18-hole championship golf courses, Mount Snow and Haystack. There are 20 miles of hiking paths and 45 miles of mountain biking trails. Packages available include romantic getaways, skiing, golf and Orvis®-endorsed fly-fishing and sporting clays.

Speaking of Orvis, their main store is about an hour away in Manchester Vermont. We'll have more on it later this week. For those who are interested in fly-fishing, classes are available. All classes are Orvis endorsed and the two day classes includes 3 hrs on stream with a guide, each day includes lunch.

2011 TADDINGERS *ORVIS SCHOOL AND GUIDING RATES FLY FISHING:

  • Two Day classes: $315.
  • One Day class : $195.
  • Half Day Clinic (3 hr.) $95.
  • Hour Casting: $30.

Accommodations at the Inn would be additional, but the Inn does offer a discount if a room and fly fishing classes are booked at the same time. There are lots of other packages (mid-week, golf, romanta getaways, etc...). Check the Inn at Sawmill Farm's site for their latest offerings. We had a great time there and we are sure you will not be disappointed. In fact, we are sure you will want to go back more than once. We do!!! [Permalink] - Vermont: Inn at Sawmill Farm
